Product Description
Advanced Chess School is an interactive tutorial for those players, young and old, who have learned the rules of chess and now wish to become players of intermediate strength. It can be considered a continuation of the very popular chess training software Chess School for Beginners. In Advanced Chess School you will learn essential concepts of playing sound chess: development, the center, fundamentals in chess tactics, and basic endgame rules. In the chess theory section you will learn the stages of the game, about material advantage, and the fundamentals of chess tactics. With the instructive examples you will master how to mate a lone King and convert a material advantage into a win. This course turns a beginner into an intermediate chess player - the fast, fun and easy way! Several languages are supported: English, French, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish.

3 out of 5 stars Good but not a Great Chess Program, however there is no   September 29, 2006

better program of this type that I am aware of. Advanced Chess School is one of two Convekta chess training programs that are designed for Chess players in the 1000-1400 ELO range. The other program is Convekta's Chess Tactics for Beginners (which I rate 5 stars).

Advanced Chess School is intended as introduction to Chess strategy and tactics. It is a good stepping stone if used in conjuction with Chess Tactics for Beginners, as a means of improvement to the 1500 ELO range. This improvement is necessary if one wishes to move on to training with the much vaunted but more difficult "CT-ART 3.0" also by Convekta. Hey, the Russian's know Chess training, so why not go with the leading Russian chess training software, i.e. Convekta?

Advanced Chess School is good, but not great. It has some excellent problems and instruction. But it is in need of a revision. It is time for an Advanced Chess School 2 in other words! The program has some minor bugs and lacks the Counterplay feature of CT-ART 3.0. It also lacks even basic chess set graphics as well, which is an irritation.

The biggest problem though with Advanced Chess School is it does not have a smooth progression in problem difficulty. Each subsection seems to start out with some Chess problems my cat could solve and then in a few problems it will throw a problem out that would stump Kaparov or one any one of the Polgar sisters... then it is back to a simple problem. Rather than progressively learning and growing in my game I feel I am on a see-saw - one minute an omnipotent Chess Master of the Universe and the next second a pathetic duffer!

By contrast, the program Chess Tactics for Beginners has better choosen problems and the problems progress in difficulty in 5 graduated stages - so one can sense better how one is improving and how much one is being challenged, kind of like karate with the different colored belts denoting increasily difficult skill levels.

Conclusion, I am using this program intensely because I know of no better program in the 1000-1500 ELO space, but this thing needs some tweaking. Convekta, we move fast in America on product development. Beginners deserve good chess instruction too.

Save your money. There are better chess instructions, for free, on the internet! Two thumbs down on this one!
